Douglas Hall – 1
Carrigtwohill United – 0
With Ballyadam closed, Carrigtwohill Girls U14 had to forfeit home advantage and travel to Douglas Hall for the Quarter Final of the National Cup. Carrigtwohill travelled with confidence even though they were missing their MVP Maedhbh Carroll. Douglas Hall are leading the premier division and were just off the back of a twenty plus game winning streak. This would be a test for Carrigtwohill.
The wind was blowing a gale and wasn’t conducive to football, but both teams responded and put on a feast of football for their fans that braved the elements.
Carrigtwohill were caught napping on five minutes when Douglas Hall scored, instead of crumbling Carrigtwohill showed what they were made of. Battling a gale and a mighty Douglas Hall team with three Cork players on it Carrigtwohill grew steadily into the game.
Emily was super in goal, distribution much improved, the defence of Alex, Caitlín, Sarah and Megan grew into the game with every tackle they won, and they did some amount of tackling. In midfield Anna, Amelia, Kinga, Claire and Sophia were superb. Up front Lily tried hard against a very experienced and assured Douglas defence. Slowly but surely the tide was turning as Carrigtwohill started to find their fluid passing game.
Carrigtwohill introduced Kaci and Gemma, both had huge impacts, Kaci dominated physically and Gemma dragged the Douglas rear guard all over the place with her fearless direct running.
Second half was all about Carrigtwohill, they had numerous chances to score but could not put the ball in the back of the net. On another day they would have scored at least three but not today.
Carrigtwohill introduced Brooke and Caoimhe to aid their tiring defenders and both girls got stuck in from the get go. When it looked like Douglas Hall were going to score a certain goal young Caoimhe Egan sped across the box and and with an outstretched leg took the ball off the toe of the Douglas Hall player. That moment typified this team of warriors.
Unfortunately for Carrigtwohill they couldn’t find an equalised. Congratulations to Douglas Hall on a super win. We dust ourselves down and come back hungrier and wiser for this experience.
