A bright sunny morning at Ballyadam Park was the setting for an entertaining and competitive game against Corkbeg which kicked off our season with high drama. The Carrigtwohill squad had been putting a lot of work into training in recent weeks in anticipation of this game and the preparation showed early on.
First strike was to the home team, when Alex Canty, in his new role as centre forward, buried the ball into the Corkbeg net after just 5 minutes. More good news was to follow when after a great run on the right wing from Ben Kearney, Robert Adam latched on to the cross following his decisive run from midfield and blasted he ball past the Corkbeg keeper. More chances were created with great work in midfield from James Barry and Abdul Rahim constantly putting the Corkbeg defense under pressure. However, the game swung back in the direction of Corkbeg towards the end of the first half with two distinctly different goals. A high looping cross from the right wing evaded the Carrigtwohill defence and found its way into the top corner of the net. Just a few minutes later, an unfortunate slip presented the Corkbeg striker with a simple opportunity to level the game
At half-time, the water bottles were emptied as the warm sunny morning and the high intensity of the play meant the players were in need of a break and a drink. The second half carried on where the first left off, with great work on both wings from Ebe Imoh and James O’Shaugnessy repelling Corkbeg. When they did get through, Victor Omesbi was in super form. In a dazzling save, Victor dived to push the ball into the post. Shortly after, Carrigtwohill were back in front again courtesy of a wonder strike from Robert Adam. Quick thinking from Jamie Dunlea found Rob open, at the outside corner of the box and his strike found the top right corner of the net. 3 goals to 2 with 15 minutes to play. The game ebbed and flowed to the end, with Corkbeg scoring the equalizer after confusion in the Carrigtwohill defence – 3 goals apiece and just minutes left on the clock.
It did look like a draw was on the cards, but unfortunately the spoils were to go to Corkbeg. They won a corner and packed the penalty box with attackers. A high floating ball was deflected into the goal by one of our defenders. A very entertaining match and a good display from the home team which augurs well for the season ahead.
