League v Springfield Ramblers A in Ballyadam Park on Friday 8th April 2016
Carrigtwohill United 3 Springfield Ramblers A 1
Scorers – Cormac Flynn, David Rooney, Jack Horgan.
One of a few top of the table clashes left for Carrig this season as both teams met for the first time this season with both teams unbeaten in the league. Carrig produced one of their best performances of the season as they beat their rivals comprehensively. Carrig dictated the play in the first half playing with a strong wind, Springfield found it difficult to get out of their own half at times. The opening goal came from a Conor Lee free kick who tried an audacious shot from over 40 yards out with the help of the wind. The shot came back off the crossbar and was headed home by the alert Cormac Flynn. Carrig had chances to increase the lead before the break with the best chance by John Carroll being cleared off the line by some great defending.
Second half started with Springfield upping the tempo and were playing a lot more ball in Carrigs half, but they came up against the best defensive display all season by Carrig. The defence was marshalled superbly by Conor Lee with his other 3 defenders Ethan Daly, Cillian Carroll & Kevin Liu all putting in superb displays. The defence didn’t give up a clear chance all game. Springfield equalised in very similar fashion to Carrigs opening goal with a long distance freekick with the wind helping, the ball looked to be routine enough for Carrigs keeper but he lost the flight of it in the low sun and dropped the ball to the feet of the Springfield attacker who jabbed it home.
Springfield were lifted but Carrig did not break and started to play the football they’ve been threatening all season and again were now the dominant team. Carrig took the well deserved lead through a powerful header from David Rooney from a Jack Horgan corner. Carrig weren’t finished as they constantly piled on the pressure in search of more goals and they were rewarded when good work down the right led to a ball being delivered into the box and a neat lay off to Jack Horgan, Jack made no mistake with an unstoppable strike from 15 yards to seal a great win.
Player of the Match – Cillian Carroll.
