Pat Hennessy U15 Tournament
Carrigtwohill United U15s travelled to Whitechurch last Sunday morning to play in a preseason invitational tournament. The draw was made and Carrigtwohill would face Midleton in one semi-final while hosts Rockmount were pitted against Avondale United in the other.
Both games kicked off simultaneously and a well taken goal by Rian Thornhill was enough to see Carrigtwohill United progress to the final following an entertaining encounter with their East Cork rivals. Rockmount were comfortable winners against Avondale.
After a short break for water and refreshments the finals commenced. A sizeable crowd gathered to watch the ‘Cup’ final between hosts Rockmount and Carrigtwohill United. Both teams would serve up a thrilling encounter over the next hour and a half.
It was Carrigtwohill that started the brighter having a goal ruled out for offside in the opening minutes but in a 1st half full of action United would score either side of the water break. Firstly, newly appointed captain Sean Og Madden would sail in a free kick from 45 yards and then following some intelligent play by Tom Walsh, Morgan Foley slotted home with a neat finish. Sandwiched between the goals were two outstanding penalty saves from Carrigtwohill goalkeeper Adam Lee.
The hosts had no choice but to take the game to Carrigtwohill in the 2nd half and it wasn’t until the final 10 minutes that Rockmount got a goal back. With Carrigtwohill now sitting deep Rockmount seized the moment and equalised with just a few minutes left on the clock. Both sides had chances late on to snatch a winner but it would finish level at 2-2.
A marathon penalty shootout ensued seeing all 20 outfield players taking a spot kick. The heroes for Carrigtwohill were keeper Adam Lee who saved 3 more penalty kicks and new signing Dominik Juric who coolly slotted home the winning spotter. Carrigtwohill United 7-6 winners in the end!
Special word of thanks to Ger McCarthy, his coaches, his players and all at Rockmount who made the tournament such a success. Congratulations to Avondale United who won the ‘Shield’ final overcoming Midleton also in a penalty shootout.
