Carrigtwohill United – 1
Springfield – 3
On a sunny but very cold and windy day Carrigtwohill left Stephen Ireland Park wondering what do they need to do to get 3 points.
After another dominant display Carrigtwohill left empty handed.
Carrigtwohill, missing a few players due to illness and injuries, started the game very brightly. Sam Collins in the defensive midfield role was passed the ball, from the left full Evan Tovey, Sam turned his man and released the ball out to Scott Power who took on the defender and shot just wide, very good start from the away team.
Carrigtwohill almost broke the deadlock on 15 minutes when Alex Kadula passed the ball up to Malachy Kelleher who turned his marker inside out and unleashed a thunder bolt that whistled wide of the post with the goalkeeper stuck to the spot.
Some great link up play from Christopher O’Reilly led to the opening goal of the game on 20 minutes after a few robust tackles in midfield from Sam and Aaron Sheehan the ball broke to Aaron who released Mal whose shot was well saved by the goalkeeper which rebounded about 20 yards from goal, Christopher held up the ball beautifully and played a one two with Scott and Christopher rifled the ball into the corner of the net, 0-1 Carrigtwohill.
The away team should of went 2 up on the stroke of half time after a lovely run from Charlie Cronin down the right hand side, played a lovely ball to the feet of Sam who played the ball around the defender into the path of Aaron whose shot skimmed the outside of the post, HT.
The 2nd half started with some very tough challenges from the opposition but this team from Carrigtwohill were not to be intimidated.
Carrigtwohill almost doubled there lead again after nice football from Alex Motriuk down the left and his deft pass to Ryan Moore produced an outstanding save from the opposition goalkeeper.
With 15 minutes remaining Carrigtwohill introduced 2 substitutes as the lads were out on there feet after putting in a monumental effort, which straight away nearly led to a goal, Sam put Luke o Regan ó Connor through on goal and his shot was well saved and bounced out to Alex Kadula who stuck the ball into the net only for the referee to blow up for a handball.
Within seconds it was 1-1, a ricochet off the Carrigtwohill defender fell kindly to the opposition who stuck the chance away well.
Carrigtwohill continued to play on the front foot and good chances went a begging 1st from Mal who broke through the defence and shot straight at the goalkeeper and 2nd Luke who had the goal at his mercy but the ball just wouldn’t fall right to get the shot away.
2 minutes remaining, disaster struck, after some neat football from Carrigtwohill in midfield a hefty tackle from the opposition caused the ball to break into the striker who rounded the last defender and passed the ball into the net 2-1. In injury time with Carrigtwohill pressing for the equaliser a misplaced pass up front led to a break away goal for the opposition, 3-1 full time.
On a different day Carrigtwohill should of been out of sight but unfortunately they weren’t and paid a heavy price. Carrigtwohill had some great performances all over the pitch but they just cannot find the luck they need at the moment to finish off games. Best performers were Charlie Cronin, Aaron Sheehan, Alex Motriuk and Man of the Match Sam Collins.
Keep the heads up lads yer a joy to watch, keep working hard in training and the luck ye need will change.
