Our 8th league match put us against title chasing Richmond in Killeady. A great game to watch but the home side just held on for the win.

Richmond were a well organised team particularly from set plays and took the lead from a corner. In the first 10 mins a corner from the left, deep to the back post, was met by their tall centre half who gave Carrig’s keeper Cameron no chance and headed them into the lead. Carrig played well, with Liam, Mark and Darragh causing the home side plenty of problems. Richmond doubled their lead when a long ball wasn’t defended well and their striker got to it and volleyed it home from the edge of the box. Carrig got back into the game before the break. From a Richmond corner, Cameron played the ball long up to Darragh on the halfway line. He controlled well and outstripped the defence down the left, before finishing brilliantly into the far corner, leaving it 2-1 at the break.

The second half started even and both teams were contesting everything. Richmond scored again from corner with another good header, this time at the near post. Carrig responded almost instantly, when they won a corner of their own. A great ball into the near post from Mark was misjudged by both the defender and keeper and it deflected into the roof of the net to bring the game to 3-2. Both sides had more chances. Cameron made 2 memorable saves, one low to his left and one to his right to keep out the Richmond attack. Liam rattled the crossbar from the edge of the box after some great inter play with Darragh. The home side extended this lead again from a set piece. A free on the left was misjudged and allowed to run all the way into the net past the Carrig defence to make it 4-2. Carrig fought back and when Darragh again out paced the home defence he was tripped in the box to give Carrig a penalty. He quickly got up and fired the penalty into the top left corner to make it 4-3 with only minutes to play. For the rest of the game Carrig pushed hard as Richmond tried to hold on for the win. It was great to see the desire in the team trying to score again, but they ran out of time. A great performance from all 10 players.
