U-13 League v Avondale United Sunday 5th October 2014
Carrigtwohill United 1 Avondale United 7
Carrigtwohill Scorers: Adbul-Rahim Mohammed.
It was a damp start to an early morning kick-off in Ballyadam for this squad. Although this was the third home game of the season for us, the team formation has yet to settle and only two players started in same position as the previous game.
The opening period of the first half found Carrigtwohill defending admirably. The new back line were adapting to their new roles but conceded a sloppy opening goal when Avondale had a simple tap-in after Carrigtwohill were unable to clear the ball from their penalty box. As with previous games, the team re-grouped and went through a purple patch where they constantly stretched Avondale but the breakthrough would not come. Darragh Hoare, selected in a new center forward role, was very unlucky not to score when one on one with the keeper, but it was to be that kind of day. Good work in midfield from James Barry who was making headed clearances at one end and setting up attacks at the other and from Cian Olden who was working tirelessly was swinging the balance of the game in Carrigtwohill’s favour. However, with just 5 minutes left in the first half, Carrigtwohill conceded a very unlucky goal when a deflected shot/cross looped into our net.
During the opening period of the second half, Avondale again were able to pressure the United defence and managed to score enough in this period to put the game beyond Carrigtwohill. However, the introduction of our three subs and the switch of Abdul Mohammed into midfield proved the catalyst for Carrigtwohill to take the upper hand again. Some wonderful probing runs from Abdul into the Avondale box, eventually reaped rewards when he scored our first goal and although Avondale played the rest of the game on the back foot, they had done enough earlier in the game to register a comprehensive win.
