Munster Senior League – Senior Div 2

22nd October 2022 at Lenaghmore Park

Pearse Celtic – 0

Carrigtwohill United – 6

Back to the league this week after Cup success last Sunday. CUFC’s senior team faced a tough travel to Lehenaghmore Park to face league leaders Pearse Celtic. The weather added to the complexity of the task as, after a nice morning, it started bucketing around 30 minutes before kick off and the rain would not relent for the duration of the match.

However, the visitors adapted to the tricky conditions better than their hosts and created several good scoring chances, controlling proceedings thanks to their impeccable back line. Carrig’s wingers were particularly active and used their speed to create danger, despite the heavy ground.

After 25 minutes, CUFC were ahead on a corner kick which fell to Darragh McCann who riffled the ball in the bottom left corner of the goals from 20 yards. Despite a lot of efforts by both teams, the score line would not change until half time.

The second half was to be a vibrant 45 minutes of soccer with CUFC exploiting that one goal advantage to hit Pearse Celtic on the counter. As the League leaders tried to put the pressure on, they started playing higher and higher up the pitch and Jason Walsh, running from well inside his own half scored Carrig’s second goal. Within 20 minutes, he had a hat trick in the bag, combining with Eric O’Sullivan and Phil Horan for his second and again running up his wing and around his opposite number to score his third and CUFC’s fourth from a tight angle.

The score line was a bit of a boost for the visitors and Zack Casangranda and TJ Murphy added two more goals before the final whistle. TJ Murphy’s goal was a bit special as he cleaned the cobwebs out of the top right corner from 25 yards.

This was a good day at the office despite the terrible weather conditions and the travelling coaches and supporters were happy and wet in equal measure.

Man of the match: Jason Walsh.
