Presidents Cup v Macroom B in Macroom on Saturday 18th October 2014
Macroom B 3 Carrigtwohill United 2 AET
Scorers: Packie O’Connor, Tom O’Shea.
Carrigtwohill were knocked out of the President’s cup in the 1st round away to Macroom B after extra time. Carrig started the game really well and, playing into the wind and uphill on a heavy pitch, they dominated possession in the 1st half. The defense were very comfortable and started a number of attacks with good passing football from the back. The midfield were dominating the game but attacks kept breaking down and the game was scoreless at half time.
Macroom started the 2nd half strongly and began to create chances. They got their reward midway through the 2nd half when they finished well after breaking quickly. Carrig responded well though and with a change in formation got an equaliser soon after when, after some good work from Lenny Hurley, the ball broke to Packie O’Connor and he finished well in the bottom corner. Carrig went 2-1 up soon after. When a corner from the left came straight back out to Tom O’Shea his cross/shot curled into the far top corner. Carrig were dominating the game and had some good chances to finish off Macroom but could not convert any of them. Macroom didn’t give up and got their reward in injury time when the Carrig keeper spilled a free kick and the onrushing Macroom striker finished to the net to send the game to extra time.
Macroom started extra time well and, with the wind at their backs, went ahead again halfway through the 1st period of extra time. Carrig dominated the rest of extra time but could not get the equaliser. Packie O’Connor hit the bar with a bullet of a header and the Macroom keeper made a brilliant reflex save from his own player in the last couple of minutes to earn the win for his team.
