On Sunday the 2nd of September Carrigtwohill United U17s played host to Ballinhassig in the second league game of the season at Ballyadam Park. After the tough encounter at the airport against Greenwood last week and a very different match, as much as Carrig’s U17s had been unable to break their opponent’s defence last Sunday, they really put the pressure on today and score four very well taken goals. The clean sheet is also worth mentioning as Darren Flynn in goal had a good afternoon, only having to run out to clear long balls on a couple of occassions. In play however, Carrigtwohill lacked success with the final ball, with many clear runs through the middle and up both wings. Not enough by way of trenchant through balls were made. Who can argue with a 4-0 win however? And in a league where the goal average matters, scoring four is always a good thing. Alex Canti scored first in the first half when Ballinhassig failed to clear their line on a corner ball, which he buried under the diving keeper. Then after a very long nervy period of play on either side of half time, Abdul-Rahim Mohammed ran up the right wing from midfield, rounded the last man and delivered a curling shot which evaded the keepers out stretched hand and in off the far post. This goal was a relief for everyone on the Carrig team, and when David Muller ran on to Abdul’s impeccable through ball a few minutes later and slotted past the advancing keeper our lads that was as good as game over. It was a great reward for David to get such a reward for his efforts as he is just back from an injury which he suffered during pre-season camp and which has kept him out of our first match. There was still time for Robert Adam to intercept a goal kick 40 yards out, dribble his way through their defence and score one of those solo goals that the coach of the team dosen’t like to see, but has to conceed when they do go in. Man of the Match goes to Abdul-Rahim Mohammed. But a job well done with all four subs on the bench coming on in various stages and kept the team going from the first to the last minute. Great team effort.
