2nd April 2022
Under-13 CSL Div 2 at Town Park, Bandon
Bandon – 1
Carrigtwohill United – 2
Carrigtwohill travelled to Bandon Saturday lunchtime in what was 2nd v 3rd in the league. The home side started better and had the Carrigtwohill defence under pressure winning 4 corners in the opening 10 minutes. But with Daniel Guiney and Conor Nolan standing firm to clear each attack, Carrigtwohill started to settle and played some lovely football with Sean Guiney, Mattie Hodnett, Eoin Garvey and Jack Lombard all linking up well.
After 15 minutes, a Bandon midfielder broke through the defence and gave keeper Cal Flavin no chance to save from only 8 yards. Going one down seemed to wake the team up and they raised the tempo with Carrigtwohill now going on the attack with Sean Guiney and Sean Barry both having shots blocked . Just before half time Carrigtwohill got a corner and Eoin Garvey put in a great delivery which Bandon could only half clear as the ball fell to Jack Lombard, his deflected shot came to the feet of the unmarked Cathal Doyle who passed it into the bottom corner to level the game !!
The 2nd half was much better from Carrigtwohill with Rory Nolan and Hugh Crowley coming into midfield and closed down any space when Bandon had the ball. With 15 minutes left and both teams pushing for a winning goal Bandon had a great chance when a ball over our backs put the forward through on goal but keeper Cal made a fantastic save. It was now Carrigs turn to go on the attack with Sean B and Conor finding plenty of space down the wings and Mattie, Eoin, Jack and Hugh keeping possession in midfield, it was only a matter of time before a chance fell to our forwards and the first of them came to Sean G who broke in from the left wing only for the keeper to make a save.
Minutes later Jack and Sean G worked hard to create a chance for Cathal who kept himself onside and even though his shot was saved by the keeper, Cathal was alert enough to knock in the rebound, it was 2-1 now with only 5 minutes left and as much as Bandon tried to attack Carrig they couldn’t get past their central defensive pair of Daniel Guiney and Cillian McCann!!
The final whistle blew with 3 points going to the away side who now make it 8 wins in a row .. Lots of good performances with Daniel G, Cathal and Jack working hard but special mention and man of the match goes to Mattie Hodnett who covered every area of the pitch made some massive tackles and pushed Carrig forward with his aggressive style of play.
Player of the Match:- Mattie Hodnett
