Scorers –

CUFC 17’s began their quest for an Under 17 Division 1 title against arguably the best team in the Division based on last season, Greenwood, away on Friday Evening. Carrig started slow and were 1-0 down after a free kick from long range was pounced on by Greenwood. The lads responded well and a long throw from Alan Warren found Tristan Horgan behind the Greenwood defence, Horgan finished coolly at the keepers near post! Carrig dominated possession but couldn’t make it count and long range free kicks and long shots from Robin Ward and Shane O’Hanlon were the closest we came to testing the Greenwood keeper. On the stroke of half time, Carrig lost possession and the Greenwood number 3 finished at the far corner! 2-1, half time!

The lads themselves decided what was wrong and planned on rectifying it in the second half. Carrig’s squad really came into play here, David Ryan, Dan Fawsitt, Hugh O’Neill, Tommy Butler all came off the bench early and made an impact. Tunde came on to sure up the defence nearer the end. A tiring Greenwood side succumbed to Carrig’s pressure with Shane Waters poking home into the corner with half an hour left. Greenwood had nothing more to give, Ryan and Butler both came close but the keeper kept Greenwood in it! With 8 left on the clock, a cross from a free kick was turned in by David Ryan to give Carrig a deserved lead! Despite some good pressure from frees and corners Carrig held on to for a deserved but what could prove to be a massive 3 points come the end of the season. We go again with a home game against last years rivals Tramore on Sunday.
